As a partner in the year 2000 national Social Capital Community Benchmark Survey, the Community Foundation surveyed 1,000 adults in greater Rochester. Local results* showed more residents in our region are somewhat more trusting and tolerant. However, deep disparities in trust exist between people of different backgrounds.

After the Social Capital Survey, the Community Foundation convened an advisory panel* to recommend a grantmaking strategy. Semiannual requests for proposals offer competitive grants to build bridges between people of different ages, incomes, neighborhoods, religious backgrounds and race/ethnicity. |
Our guidelines for our civic engagement grants encourage applications that promote learning and participating in government. One grant helps the Latino Alliance prepare Latino candidates to run for public office and participate in political campaigns throughout Monroe County. Now in its third year, the academy has graduated 34 people from varied backgrounds and political parties.

For nearly 10 years, Rochester Area Community Foundation has invested in and guided Rochester AmeriCorps, whose members have completed approximately 1.2 million hours of service to help government and nonprofit organizations that promote public safety and provide alternative activities for youth. Recent Community Foundation grants have funded host-site scholarships that enable sites to meet the non-federal match obligation. |
