Promoting Philanthropy
Philanthropists have built the cultural and charitable fabric of Rochester, from Kodak’s George Eastman to B. Thomas Golisano of Paychex. Businessman Joe U. Posner promoted broader, community-based philanthropy that people from all walks of life could enjoy. He founded Rochester Area Community Foundation to support charitable giving for community benefit.

SM Two in 3 people who support charity do not include charitable giving in their wills. Now in its seventh year, greater Rochester’s WILLpowerSM collaborative promotes planned giving and organized philanthropy. WILLpowerSM guides are available for donors, professional advisors, and nonprofit organizations. The Community Foundation provides key funding. |
Since 1991, Rochester Area Community Foundation has recognized creative and effective giving with our Philanthropy Awards. Self-nominations and nonprofit organization submissions are welcome. The special “loving cup” award was designed by award-winning artist Wendell Castle of Scottsville, NY. Awards are presented at the Community Foundation’s annual luncheon.

Our Youth As Resources program teaches young people how to review proposals and make grants. The Community Foundation provides financial support for a youth grantmaking panel to support projects proposed by other young people. The program is run by the Rochester/Monroe County Youth Bureau as part of the Youth Participation Project.
