College students interested in urban affairs take part in the Urban Fellows internship program each summer. With support from the Community Foundation, the interns spend 10 weeks working in the city and learning about urban politics, demographics, and history.
Fellows live at the University of Rochester, the program's sponsor, and all attend local colleges or are from the area. Each fellow is partnered with a community agency.
Begun in 2004, this program is a model for college-community partnerships. It inspires students to become active, engaged citizens, broadening their understanding of the world beyond the classroom and enriching the community in the process. It’s also a stellar example of our efforts to actively involve youth in community improvement and to promote understanding among diverse populations. Urban Fellows has also added a post-graduate opportunity called Rochester Youth Year.
